01What digital eye strain is

Digital eye strain, sometimes called computer vision syndrome, is the umbrella term for a set of eye and vision symptoms that can follow long stretches of screen use: tired eyes, dryness, blurry vision, difficulty focusing, and sometimes headaches. It is extremely common, and for many people it has been quietly normalized as just how eyes feel after a long day.

The reassuring part first: there is no good evidence that normal screen use permanently damages healthy eyes. The symptoms are real, but they are generally temporary and ease with the right habits.

02Why screens cause it

Two things drive most of it. The first is blinking. When you concentrate on a screen, your blink rate drops sharply, and blinking is what spreads a fresh tear film across the eye. Less blinking means a drier, more irritated surface, which is behind a lot of the burning and grittiness people feel.

The second is focusing effort. Staring at a fixed, close distance for long periods keeps the small focusing muscles of the eye working continuously, which is tiring. Glare and poor lighting can add to it.

Your screen is not attacking your eyes. They simply were not built to hold one close distance, barely blinking, for hours at a stretch. Give them distance and blinks, and most of the discomfort eases.

You will see scary-sounding figures, often that up to 90% of screen users are affected. Treat any single number with caution.

The honest truth: Reported prevalence ranges enormously, from under 10% to over 90%, because there is no agreed clinical definition and studies measure different symptoms in different groups.
